Karnataka HC rejects habeas corpus petitions in gold smuggling case
The Karnataka High Court has rejected the requests of actress Ranya Rao and her two friends, Tarun Raju and Sahil Jain, to be released from jail.
They were arrested for allegedly smuggling gold from Dubai to India.
The court said that the detention order against them is legal and valid.
Ranya was caught at the Bengaluru airport with a lot of gold hidden on her body.
The authorities say that the three of them have been smuggling gold for a long time.
The court also said that they might run away if released, so they should stay in jail.
The detention order means they can be kept in jail for up to a year, even if they get bail.
Karnataka High Court rejected habeas corpus petitions of Ranya Rao, Tarun Raju, and Sahil Jain in a gold smuggling case.
Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3 at Bengaluru airport with 14.2 kg of smuggled gold worth Rs 12.56 crore.
The court noted the grave effect of economic offences on the nation's economy and the possibility of flight risk.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) alleged that the trio smuggled over 100 kg of gold in multiple trips.
The COFEPOSA detention order dated April 22 allows detention for up to a year even if bail is obtained.
