Israel Approves 19 New West Bank Settlements
Israel's government has decided to build 19 new settlements in the West Bank.
This is a big increase, bringing the total number of settlements to 210.
The West Bank is a place where Palestinians live, and many countries, including the United Nations, say building settlements there is not allowed.
The U.S. president has warned Israel not to annex territories in the West Bank, as it could lose U.S. support.
Some people in Israel, like Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich, support building more settlements for security reasons and historical claims.
Others, like the United Nations, think it's not fair to the Palestinians and makes peace harder to achieve.
Israel's security cabinet approved 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, December 21.
This brings the total number of settlements approved in the past three years to 69, a nearly 50% increase from 141 in 2022 to 210.
The approval includes two settlements previously evacuated during a 2005 disengagement plan.
Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich asserted that the move aims to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The UN Secretary-General criticized the expansion, stating it fuels tensions and impedes the viability of a Palestinian state.
