Protests Target Election Chief as Arrest and Trade Talks Unfold

People in Delhi and Mumbai protested against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

They were concerned about how India’s Election Commission is handling changes to voter lists.

Police detained several protesters and leaders near Delhi’s Jantar Mantar area.

Internet service was also suspended there, and the protest site was blocked with barricades.

In another case, gym owner Deepak Kumar was arrested in Uttarakhand.

Police said he allegedly assaulted a trader after the trader commented on one of his social-media posts.

Separately, India and the United States are still discussing a trade deal.

A US official said the talks are close to an ending, but a final agreement is not yet expected immediately.
