MHA Clarifies Exemptions and Regulations Under Immigration Act
India's new immigration law, the Immigration and Foreigners Act of 2025, has some new rules.
The government clarified some of these.
People from Nepal and Bhutan can cross the border without a passport or visa.
Some groups like Tibetan refugees and religious minorities fleeing persecution are also exempt.
Everyone applying for a visa now needs to give their fingerprints and other biometric data.
The MHA also said illegal immigrants will be held in camps pending deportation.
Foreigners need permission to climb mountains or visit restricted areas, like parts of some states, and some nationalities are restricted.
MHA issued a gazette notification clarifying exemptions to the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan are exempt from passport and visa requirements when entering India via land or air.
The exemption also applies to certain individuals including military personnel, Tibetan refugees, and religious minorities.
Foreigners applying for visas or OCI cards must provide biometric information.
Restrictions on movement will be imposed on illegal immigrants in holding centers.
