India Tightens Sugar Stock Limits as Festive Prices Hit Records

India Tightens Sugar Stock Limits as Festive Prices Hit Records

India has told large sugar buyers and dealers to keep no more than 15 days of sugar in storage.

The rule starts on September 1 and lasts until November 30, 2026.

It applies to businesses that use at least 10 metric tonnes of sugar each month.

Sweet makers, confectionery companies, soft drink manufacturers and food processors are included.

Government institutions are not covered by the rule.

Sugar prices have risen sharply and reached record levels.

Demand usually increases during festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra and Diwali.

Officials are also considering limited imports to help keep enough sugar available.
