Venice Film Festival 2026 Sets Starry, Politically Charged Lineup
The Venice Film Festival is a major event where people show and discuss movies from around the world.
In 2026, it will happen on an island called the Lido near Venice, Italy.
It will begin with a new movie called Ink by Danny Boyle.
Many famous actors and filmmakers are expected to attend.
Maggie Gyllenhaal will lead the group that judges the main competition.
George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn will receive special awards for their careers.
Some films will discuss the war in Gaza and the experiences of people affected by conflict.
The festival is also being criticized because only one main competition movie was directed by a woman.
Organizers changed their plans and will hold the opening jury press conference after initially saying they would skip it.
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival will run from September 2 to September 12, 2026, on Venice’s Lido.
Danny Boyle’s tabloid-media drama Ink will open the festival with its world premiere in the Sala Grande.
Maggie Gyllenhaal will chair the competition jury, while George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn will receive Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement.
The festival faces political pressure over the Israel-Gaza war, including an open letter from more than 200 filmmakers and artists.
Only one main-competition film is directed by a woman, while Venice Days will feature a lineup with more than half its films directed by women.

Opening jury press conference
Critics and advocates
The initial decision to skip the customary press conference prompted criticism and speculation, especially amid political pressure related to the Israel-Gaza war.
Festival program and organizers
The festival attributed the cancellation to a scheduling conflict and later reversed the decision, confirming that the opening and individual competition-film press conferences would proceed.
Response to the Israel-Gaza war
Critics and advocates
The Venice4Palestine collective, backed by more than 200 filmmakers and artists, is pressing the festival to take concrete action and fly the Palestinian flag throughout the event.
Festival program and organizers
The festival is proceeding with its scheduled program, including NAZA, a competition film that addresses the conflict directly; no large-scale protests are currently planned.
Gender representation
Critics and advocates
The presence of only one woman-directed film in the main competition is seen as evidence that the festival has not met its earlier gender-parity goal.
Festival program and organizers
Other parts of the festival provide greater representation: more than half of Venice Days selections are directed by women, and Laura Poitras is returning with a film in the Venice Open section.
