India to Launch Verified Caller ID System (CNAP) to Combat Spam
Imagine your phone rings, but instead of just seeing a number, you see the name of the person calling.
That's what India is planning with a new system called CNAP.
It will use official records that telecom companies already have to show the registered name of the caller.
This is different from apps like Truecaller because it uses verified information, making it more trustworthy.
The goal is to help people know who is calling before they answer, especially to stop annoying spam or scam calls.
This system will work even on basic phones and is being built into the phone networks.
It's a big step to make calling safer and more clear for everyone in India.
India is launching its own verified caller identification system, CNAP, developed by TRAI and DoT.
CNAP will display the registered name of the caller on users' screens, pulling data from telecom KYC records.
The system aims to replace third-party apps like Truecaller and significantly reduce spam and scam calls.
CNAP will be enabled by default for all users, with an option to opt out via telecom operators.
Pilot trials have been conducted, and backend integration is underway for a nationwide rollout.
