India Tightens Delayed Birth and Death Registration Rules

India Tightens Delayed Birth and Death Registration Rules

India has made a new rule for registering births and deaths late.

The rule will start on October 1, 2026.

Births and deaths must still be registered under the law.

If registration happens more than one year late, a government magistrate must approve it.

If it happens more than two years late, a first-class judicial magistrate must approve it.

Officials must check that the information is correct.

The applicant must pay the required fee.

The government says the stricter process is meant to encourage people to report births and deaths on time.
