Why India Is Wooing Sri Lanka’s JVP as a Pragmatic Partner

Why India Is Wooing Sri Lanka’s JVP as a Pragmatic Partner

India has invited leaders of Sri Lanka’s JVP party to meet Indian politicians.

The JVP used to be strongly critical of India’s role in Sri Lanka.

Its general secretary, Tilvin Silva, recently visited India with a party delegation.

He met BJP leaders and India’s foreign minister.

India wants to build a better working relationship with the JVP.

It also hopes the party will support more power for Sri Lanka’s provinces.

Indian officials say this could help reduce separatist tensions and improve life in the north and east.

India also wants projects it is helping fund to move forward more quickly.
