Delhi Capitals Cricketer Abhishek Porel Arrested on Alleged Rape Charges
Abhishek Porel plays cricket for a team called the Delhi Capitals.
The police arrested him because a woman said he did something very wrong.
The woman is studying to become a doctor.
She said he promised to marry her but did not keep his promise.
She also said he threatened to share private pictures of her.
A big court called the Calcutta High Court told the police to arrest him.
The police took his electronic devices to look for evidence.
A judge said he must stay with the police for three days of questioning.
Remember, he is only accused, so nobody knows for sure if the accusations are true.
People are considered innocent until a court decides what really happened.
Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel (also spelled Abishek) was arrested by Mogra police from his residence in Dum Dum, West Bengal, on alleged rape and blackmail charges.
A medical student from Karnataka alleged Porel had a sexual relationship with her on the false promise of marriage; she said the relationship lasted around three to three-and-a-half years.
The Calcutta High Court directed police on July 20 to arrest him and ordered the seizure of his electronic devices to prevent dissemination of the complainant's intimate photos and videos.
Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (including Section 69) and the Information Technology Act; one report said 19 sections, most of them non-bailable, were invoked.
A court in Chinsurah denied him bail and remanded him to three-day police custody; Porel had earlier denied the allegations, and reactions from him and his family were awaited.
