India's Power Demand Trends in 2025
In November 2025, India's overall power demand slightly decreased, but Delhi saw record-high power demand due to colder weather.
The highest daily power demand in Delhi for November was 4,486 MW, and it's expected to keep rising in December.
Meanwhile, the national electricity prices in the spot market went down, and there was more power generated from renewable sources like wind and solar.
However, the government is also considering building more coal power plants until 2047 to ensure energy independence, even though this might affect India's climate goals.
The power companies in Delhi are preparing to meet the high demand with a mix of renewable and traditional energy sources.
India's power demand decreased by 0.3% to 123 BUs in November 2025 compared to the previous year.
Delhi's power demand reached a record high of 4,486 MW on November 28, 2025, with projections for further increases in December.
Electricity prices in the spot market declined, with RTM prices down 9% and DAM prices down 7%.
Renewable energy generation increased by 17% on-year, while coal-based power generation declined by 3.5%.
The Indian government is considering expanding coal power capacity to 420 gigawatts by 2047, an 87% increase from current levels, to achieve energy independence.
