Mahananda River Included in Centre's Urban Management Plan
The Mahananda river and four other small rivers in Siliguri, West Bengal, have been included in a big government plan to clean and improve rivers.
This plan is part of a national mission to make the Ganga river cleaner.
The government will work with experts from Jadavpur University to make sure the rivers are cleaned up and the areas around them are made more beautiful.
A special team will check on the progress every two weeks to make sure everything goes well.
The mayor of Siliguri is also asking for another river, the Karala, to be included in this plan.
The Mahananda river and four other rivulets in Siliguri have been included in the Centre’s Urban River Management Plan (URMP).
The project is implemented under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and aims to rejuvenate rivers and beautify riverbanks.
An expert team from Jadavpur University will oversee the implementation of the project.
A monitoring committee, including officials from the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) and state departments, will review the project's progress every fortnight.
The SMC plans to request the inclusion of the Karala river in Jalpaiguri under the same rejuvenation programme.
