Whistleblower alleges widespread fraud and dysfunction in asylum system

A Home Office official says many asylum applications may contain made-up stories.

The official, known as “J,” said only about 1% of claims are genuine.

J described groups of applicants using very similar stories, which officials call “package claims.”

The examples involved applicants from Iraq, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

J also said the interview process can give people time to prepare false evidence.

Official figures show that 38% of initial decisions resulted in refugee protection in the year to June.

That was lower than the 77% grant rate recorded in 2022.

The Home Office says it has strong checks to find false claims.
