Rupee Hits Record Low Amid Trade Deal Uncertainty
The Indian rupee has been getting weaker, which means it takes more rupees to buy one US dollar.
This can make things we import, like oil and electronics, more expensive.
Right now, people in India aren't feeling the full effect because of discounts and government policies.
But in a few months, everyday items like oil, medicine, and fuel might become more expensive.
This could make life harder for many families, especially those who don't earn dollars.
People who dream of studying abroad or taking foreign trips might have to put those plans on hold because they cost more now.
The government says a weaker rupee is good for some people, like those who send money back to India or sell things to other countries.
But for most families, it's making life more difficult and forcing them to borrow money just to get by.
The stock market is also affected, with some days starting well but then going down because of money leaving the country and weak trends in other Asian markets.
The Indian rupee depreciated to Rs 90.33 against the US dollar, marking an all-time low.
Uncertainty over the India-US trade deal and sustained foreign fund outflows weighed on the rupee.
The rupee's depreciation is expected to impact household budgets and aspirations, making overseas education and imported goods more expensive.
Government interventions, such as adjusted excise duties and low GST rates on essentials, have temporarily cushioned the impact on household budgets.
Household debt in India has more than doubled in seven years, with 28.3 crores of Indians in debt as of 2024-2025.
