SC defers SIR hearing to January 13
The Supreme Court in India decided to postpone the final hearing on some complaints about a special review of voter lists in certain states, including Bihar.
The hearing was supposed to happen on January 8, but the court said it will now happen on January 13.
The Election Commission, which is in charge of elections, told the court that it has the power to do this review and that it's important to make sure only Indian citizens are on the voter lists.
The court wants to make sure everyone has a chance to explain their side before making a decision.
The Supreme Court deferred the final hearing on petitions challenging the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to January 13.
The hearing was initially scheduled for January 8 but was postponed to allow the Election Commission to present its arguments.
The Election Commission asserted its power and duty to undertake SIR and prevent foreigner registrations.
The petitions challenge the SIR of electoral rolls in several states, including Bihar.
The Supreme Court Bench, headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, will resume the proceedings on January 13.
