Arati Kadav on Indie Films Struggle
Arati Kadav, a well-known indie filmmaker, recently explained why many films are not being approved for production.
She believes that the arrival of big streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in 2017 changed the way films are valued.
These platforms focused more on getting a lot of viewers rather than making money, which led to very low prices for high-quality content.
For example, a popular show like Game of Thrones, which cost $600 million to make, was available to Indian viewers for just Rs 200.
This strategy made it hard for theatres to compete, as they had to raise ticket prices to cover costs.
Kadav also mentioned that even though streaming platforms have many shows, only a few are really good, and this makes it seem like there is more content than there actually is.
As a result, artists are not getting paid as much as they used to.
She suggested that customers need to pay more for good movies to support the industry.
In November, Kadav was one of 46 filmmakers who asked for better access to theatres for indie films, highlighting the struggles they face.
Arati Kadav, known for films like Cargo and Mrs, explained why indie films are not getting greenlit.
She attributed the issue to the advent of streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in 2017.
Kadav highlighted that these platforms focused on impressions over revenue, leading to low prices for high-quality content.
She cited the example of Game of Thrones, which cost $600 million but was available for Rs 200 on JioHotstar.
Kadav argued that theatres are struggling due to high ticket prices and low footfalls, and artists are not getting paid as much.
