CBI Arrests Harnek Singh After Deportation From United States
Harnek Singh was arrested in India after being deported from the United States.
The CBI says he had avoided the investigation and trial for more than ten years.
The case involves alleged fake phone calls made in 2013.
The callers pretended to be Singapore Immigration officials.
They told people they had made mistakes on airport forms and might face punishment or deportation.
The callers then demanded money as supposed fines or settlement fees.
The CBI says the money was sent to receivers in India through Western Union, including an outlet linked to Singh.
Singh is expected to appear before a special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana.
Harnek Singh was arrested at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after being deported from the United States.
He was wanted in a 2013 case involving alleged spoofed-call fraud targeting Indian nationals in Singapore.
Fraudsters allegedly impersonated Singapore Immigration officials and demanded settlement fees or fines through Western Union.
The CBI said Singh operated a money-transfer outlet linked to co-accused Aditya Bhardwaj and Deepak Jain.
The CBI pursued an Interpol Red Notice and Look-Out Circular before Singh’s deportation; he is to be produced before a Panchkula court.
