Angh Wins TIFF Platform Prize, Earns Direct 2027 Oscars Pathway
Angh is the first feature film directed by Nagaland filmmaker Theja Rio.
It won the top prize in the Platform Competition at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.
The film was the only Indian movie in that competition.
It takes place in Nagaland during the 1960s and is spoken mostly in the Konyak language.
The story follows a village chief, his family and an American missionary who brings new beliefs and changes.
The film explores family, faith, tradition and cultural change.
Rio expanded the movie from his award-winning short film of the same name.
Winning at TIFF gives Angh a special route to be considered for the 2027 Oscars, although it has not yet received an Oscar nomination.
Theja Rio’s debut feature Angh won TIFF’s Platform Prize on September 20, 2026.
The film was the only Indian entry in TIFF’s 12-film Platform Competition and received a trophy and CAD 20,000.
Set in 1960s Nagaland, Angh follows a Konyak village chief, his family and an arriving American missionary.
The film is almost entirely in Konyak, was shot on 16mm and features an Indigenous Naga cast alongside Douglas Henshall.
The Platform win makes Angh automatically eligible for consideration in the 2027 Oscars’ International Feature Film category, but it is not an Oscar nomination.
