Alberta Separatists Meet US Officials
The Alberta Prosperity Project, a group that wants Alberta to become independent from Canada, has met with US government officials a few times.
They want the US to support Alberta if it becomes independent and have asked for a huge loan of $500 billion.
The US officials say they didn't promise anything, but the meetings show that the US and Canada are not getting along very well.
Most people in Alberta don't want independence, but the group is trying to start a discussion about it.
The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has spoken to the US President about this and believes the US will respect Canada's sovereignty.
The Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) met with US State Department officials at least three times since April 2023.
APP is seeking another meeting to propose a $500 billion credit facility for Alberta if it becomes independent.
US officials denied offering any support, stating the meetings were routine.
The Treasury Department is unaware of any request for a credit facility.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expects the US to respect Canada's sovereignty despite the meetings.
