Vaishno Devi Medical College Loses Permission Amid Protests
A medical college in India, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, tried to get all its student seats under a national quota system.
This would have allowed students from all over India to join, not just from the local area.
The college's requests were rejected three times.
Recently, the college faced protests because many of the students admitted were Muslim.
Some groups wanted these students removed or the course shut down.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) then withdrew the college's permission to run its MBBS course, saying the college didn't meet the required standards.
The students will now be moved to other colleges in the region.
Some people are happy about this decision, while others think it's unfair and divisive.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) withdrew permission for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) to run its MBBS course due to protests and deficiencies.
Protests erupted after 42 of 50 seats were taken by Muslim students from Kashmir, with groups arguing the college was run on Hindu donations.
The NMC cited serious deficiencies in faculty strength, clinical material, and infrastructure during a surprise inspection.
Students will be relocated to other government medical colleges in the Union Territory.
Political leaders from various parties have reacted sharply, with some calling the decision communal and others supporting it.
