Iceland’s EU Talks Referendum Remains Too Close to Call

Icelanders voted on whether to start talking with the European Union about possibly joining it.

They were not voting to join the EU immediately.

If most voters say yes, Iceland would negotiate with the EU and vote again later.

The vote was very close, and early counting showed different small leads as more ballots were counted.

Supporters believe EU ties could help with expensive loans and improve security.

They also think using the euro might help the economy.

Opponents want Iceland to remain independent and keep control of its fishing waters.

The government said it would respect the result, even though the referendum is technically non-binding.
