Trump Proposal Could Limit Refundable Tax Credits For Immigrants

Trump Proposal Could Limit Refundable Tax Credits For Immigrants

The U.S. government has proposed changing who can receive refunds from four tax credits.

A tax credit can lower the taxes someone owes.

Some credits can also give extra money back when they are refundable.

The proposal would limit that extra refund for people who do not meet certain immigration categories.

People would generally need to be citizens, nationals, or qualified aliens under a 1996 law.

H-1B workers are not specifically listed as qualified aliens in the proposal.

However, the proposal would not automatically remove every tax benefit connected to these credits.

The rules are only proposed and could change before becoming final.
