India-Raised Founders Build $560 Billion Overseas Startup Footprint
A study looked at large startup companies connected to people who grew up in India.
It found that 205 companies outside India have about $560 billion in value attributed to their India-raised founders.
This is not the same as saying those founders personally own or have $560 billion.
Most of these companies are based in the United States.
Some were started entirely by India-raised founders, while others had founders from different backgrounds.
The study also found 101 large startups built in India, worth about $349 billion using the same calculation.
Many founders studied technology or engineering, often at Indian Institutes of Technology or US universities.
Most founders were at least 30 when they started their companies, suggesting that many had years of experience first.
When the full value of companies is counted rather than only the founder-attributed share, the overseas and India-linked companies have a combined valuation of about $1.09 trillion.
Prosus and Dealroom estimate that 205 overseas unicorns linked to India-raised founders represent about $560 billion in founder-attributed value.
The United States accounts for 187 of the 205 companies, or about 91%, while 18 were founded in India and later moved abroad.
About 70 companies were founded entirely by people who grew up in India, while 135 had mixed founding teams.
The index identifies 101 India-based unicorns worth about $349 billion on the same founder-share basis, bringing the linked value near $910 billion.
IIT Delhi, Stanford, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras are among the most common institutions in the founders’ education records, with technical subjects dominating the dataset.
