Demat Account Growth Slows to Six-Year Low in 2025
In 2025, the number of demat accounts in India grew to a new high of 21.59 crore, but the growth rate slowed down to 16.5%, the lowest in six years.
This means that while more people are opening demat accounts, the number of new accounts added each year is increasing at a slower pace.
CDSL, one of the two main depositories, added the most new accounts, while NSDL added fewer but still saw growth.
This slowdown comes after years of much faster growth, especially during the pandemic when many new investors entered the market.
Total demat accounts in India reached 21.59 crore by December 2025, up from 18.53 crore a year earlier.
Year-on-year growth slowed to 16.5%, the lowest in six years, with 3.06 crore new accounts added in 2025.
CDSL accounted for the majority of new accounts, adding 2.62 crore (17.9% growth) to reach 17.28 crore total accounts.
NSDL added 0.44 crore accounts (11.4% growth), bringing its total to 4.32 crore.
The data shows a steady deceleration in growth after rapid expansions in previous years, particularly in 2021.
