Omar Abdullah Welcomes Supreme Court Scrutiny of Voter Deletions
Omar Abdullah, the leader of Jammu and Kashmir, welcomed the Supreme Court asking questions about people removed from voter lists.
The removals happened during a review of the voter lists called the Special Intensive Revision.
The court has asked the Election Commission and the Government of India to respond.
Abdullah said he would wait to see whether the court’s review leads to corrections.
He said opposition leaders had raised concerns before, and that more media attention has now brought the issue into focus.
He also said Jammu and Kashmir would not implement the Uniform Civil Code.
Abdullah believes a law meant to be uniform should apply everywhere, not just in some states.
He called for the proposal to be debated in Parliament instead of being introduced state by state.
