LG Directs MCD to Pilot Indore Waste Model
The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, had a meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials.
He noticed that only about half of the waste in Delhi is being separated at the source.
This means that a lot of waste is being thrown away without being sorted, which is not good for the environment.
The LG suggested that Delhi should learn from Indore, a city in India that has been very successful in managing its waste.
Indore started a special waste management system in 2016.
Since then, it has been named the cleanest city in India every year.
The Indore model includes separating waste at the source, collecting it from every home, making compost from wet waste, and recycling dry waste.
The LG wants Delhi to try this model in one of its areas to see if it can work there too.
LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu reviewed MCD's waste management and found only 50% waste is segregated at source.
Indore model emphasizes 100% source segregation into six categories: wet, dry, hazardous, e-waste, sanitary, and plastic.
Indore has been named the cleanest city in India every year since 2017 due to its waste management model.
The Indore model includes door-to-door collection, composting, and dry waste recovery.
LG directed MCD to pilot the Indore model in one of its zones to improve waste management.
