OpenAI Restructures for Profitability, Microsoft Gains Key Stake and Revenue Share
OpenAI, the company that made ChatGPT, is changing how it works.
It used to be a non-profit, but now it's becoming a company that wants to make money and might even sell shares to the public in the future.
Microsoft, a big technology company, is helping with this change and will own a big part of OpenAI, about 27%.
As part of the deal, OpenAI will also give Microsoft a portion of the money it makes, around 20%.
A special group called the OpenAI Foundation will still oversee what OpenAI does, owning 26% of the new company.
This change is happening so OpenAI can make more money to build bigger and better AI, like super-smart researchers that could be ready in a few years.
They even want to build huge computer centers to power these advanced AIs.
Some people believe very advanced AI, called superintelligence, could be here in less than ten years.
OpenAI is restructuring into a for-profit corporate entity to pursue profitability and a potential IPO.
Microsoft will hold approximately 27% of OpenAI and receive about 20% of OpenAI's revenue.
The non-profit OpenAI Foundation will retain a 26% stake in the for-profit entity and govern research direction.
OpenAI aims to have an AI researcher akin to an intern by September 2026 and a fully automated researcher by 2028.
The company plans to build significant data center infrastructure, aiming for a weekly power output of one gigawatt.
