NGT Rules on Great Nicobar Project Report
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has decided not to consider parts of a report about the Great Nicobar project that were not officially submitted.
The report was made by a special committee set up by the government.
An environmental activist, Ashish Kothari, had asked the NGT to look at the whole report, but the NGT said it would only consider the parts that were officially shared.
The government said the full report couldn't be shared because it contains secret information.
The project includes building a big port, a new town, an airport, and a power plant on Great Nicobar Island, which is very important for nature.
The NGT is still deciding if the project follows all the rules to protect the environment.
NGT allowed two applications by Ashish Kothari to consider only parts of the HPC report that were officially submitted.
NGT rejected applications to share the full HPC report, citing it was not provided to the petitioner and was kept confidential for national security.
The HPC was formed in April 2023 to address environmental concerns about the Rs 81,000 crore Great Nicobar project.
The project includes a transshipment port, integrated township, airport, and a power plant, involving diversion of 130 sq km of forest land.
The Centre opposed the applications, terming them 'highly belated', and had no objection to deciding the ongoing petitions based on the pleadings without considering the HPC report.
