Calcutta High Court Warns Lawyers Against Weak Public Interest Litigations

The Calcutta High Court heard several public interest cases on Wednesday.

Chief Justice R.V. Ghuge said some lawyers were filing petitions without enough documents.

He said this makes the court spend time on cases that may not be properly prepared.

He told lawyers to read more and build stronger legal arguments.

The judges warned that weak or meritless petitions could lead to heavy penalties.

Public interest litigation lets people ask courts to address problems affecting the public.

Such cases have previously led to important decisions in Calcutta.

The Supreme Court has also said these petitions should help ordinary people rather than serve private, publicity, financial or political interests.
