Trump Envoy Secures 25 Belarus Prisoner Releases, Sanctions Eased

The United States and Belarus made a small agreement about prisoners and sanctions.

Belarus agreed to release 25 people.

In return, the United States will remove sanctions from two Belarusian companies.

U.S. envoy John Coale said the deal could lead to more releases.

Some released people were taken to neighboring Lithuania.

Human rights groups say Belarus still holds more than 900 political prisoners.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says these people should not be called political prisoners.

Opposition leaders are happy for those freed but say repression and arrests are continuing.
