Trump and Carney Clash as Canada-US Trade Talks Stall

The United States and Canada were trying to make a new trade agreement.

The talks stopped after Canada said the United States had made demands it could not accept.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the United States asked for too much and offered too little.

He also said the demands could hurt the benefits Canada would get from a deal.

President Donald Trump responded by saying Canada wanted the benefits of being a US state without becoming one.

Trump also accused Canada of charging high tariffs on American farmers.

The United States then placed 50% tariffs on many Canadian products, including plywood, cement, wine and hockey sticks.

Canada said it would answer with tariffs of its own at the same dollar value.

The disagreement is putting pressure on the trade relationship between the two countries.
