Glaw Lake Becomes India’s 101st Ramsar Site in Arunachal

Glaw Lake Becomes India’s 101st Ramsar Site in Arunachal

Glaw Lake is a freshwater lake high in the Eastern Himalayas.

It is inside a protected area in Arunachal Pradesh, India.

The lake is home to many plants and helps support water-dependent animals.

The Mishmi community also considers it sacred.

On 3 August 2026, it was named a Ramsar Site, meaning it is internationally important as a wetland.

Scientists had to study its plants, animals, water systems and surrounding landscape before it could be nominated.

The new status does not mean conservation work is finished.

Experts say the lake and other wetlands need careful management that considers wildlife, local people, pollution and future tourism.
