Punjab Denies Parole to Amritpal Singh, Court Demands Justification
Amritpal Singh, a member of parliament and leader of Waris Punjab De, is currently in jail in Assam under the National Security Act.
He asked for temporary permission to leave jail (parole) to attend the Winter Session of Parliament, but the Punjab government said no.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court then told the Punjab government to show the reasons why they denied the parole.
Amritpal's lawyers said the denial was unfair and didn't explain how his attendance in Parliament would harm national security.
They even suggested he could attend virtually.
The government argued that allowing him to speak, even virtually, could be dangerous.
The court will hear more about this next week.
Punjab government denied parole to Amritpal Singh for attending Parliament's Winter Session.
Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the state to submit the foundational material for the parole rejection.
Amritpal's counsel argued that the denial lacked specific material and questioned how his parliamentary attendance could harm national security.
The state counsel argued that allowing Amritpal any platform could pose serious security risks.
The next hearing is scheduled for next Monday, with the state assured to present the complete record.
