Taiwan Day Traders Double Down Despite Brutal Stock Slump

Some people in Taiwan, like a man named Dorian Hsu, borrowed money to invest in stocks because prices kept going up.

In July, stock prices suddenly dropped, and many of these investors lost a lot of money.

Mr. Hsu lost more than $150,000 but says he will keep investing because he wants to get rich.

Taiwan's main stock index fell 6.5% in July, its worst drop in many years, yet ordinary people kept buying more stocks.

These investors believe Taiwan makes computer chips that the whole world needs, so prices will rise again.

Because so many people borrowed money, stock loan companies had to check on hundreds of accounts and warn some investors to add more money.

In South Korea, the stock market fell much harder, dropping 22% in July because of risky bets.

Taiwan was protected because its investors made fewer risky bets and stayed confident.

Now the government is watching closely and will show everyone how much borrowing is happening so the market stays safe.
