Tamil Producers Announce Shutdown Over Eight-Week OTT Window
Tamil film producers are unhappy with a new rule about when movies can move from theatres to streaming services.
Theatre owners and distributors said they would show new films only if producers promised to wait eight weeks before putting them on OTT platforms.
Producers said this rule was decided without asking them or other film groups.
They also said similar rules were not being used in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, or Kerala.
Because of the disagreement, producers announced that no new Tamil films would be released in theatres from September 1.
They also said filming and post-production work would stop on that date.
One report said theatre owners and distributors would not give advance payments for new films.
The producers want the Tamil Nadu government to help solve the problem.
Theatre owners’ secretary S. Sridhar said the groups should meet and talk.
The reports differ on the year, with most saying “this year” and one referring to September 1, 2026.
