India’s Electricity Demand Stays Near Summer Peak in September

India’s Electricity Demand Stays Near Summer Peak in September

India is using almost as much electricity in September as it did during the hottest part of summer.

On September 10, electricity use reached 269 gigawatts.

That was the highest September level ever recorded in the country.

The year’s highest level so far was 270 gigawatts in May.

Usually, electricity demand falls after summer because the weather becomes less hot.

People and businesses then use fewer air conditioners and other cooling machines.

This year, demand has stayed unusually high.

At the same time, less-than-usual rainfall has reduced electricity produced by hydropower.
