Cadence Design Admits Illegal Sales to China, Pays Fine
Cadence, a company that makes chip design tools, admitted it broke U.S. rules by selling its products to a Chinese military university (NUDT).
The U.S. government has concerns that NUDT uses these tools for military activities.
Cadence will pay a fine of $140.6 million as a result.
The violations happened from 2015 to 2021.
This all happened as the U.S. is putting more restrictions on technology sales to China, but a recent change made it a little easier for these companies to do business.
Cadence Design Systems pleaded guilty to violating U.S. export controls.
The company sold hardware and software to China's National University of Defense Technology (NUDT).
Cadence will take a one-time charge of $140.6 million to settle the case.
