Bloomberg Delays Indian Bond Inclusion
Bloomberg has decided to wait before adding Indian government bonds to a big global investment list.
They want to make sure everything works smoothly, like trading and handling money after a sale.
They will check again by mid-2026 and let everyone know what happens next.
If they do add the bonds, it will happen slowly over time to keep things stable.
Right now, the 10-year bond yields are at 6.63%, and they went up a little bit after the announcement.
This delay might mean less money coming into India from foreign investors, which could make borrowing a bit more expensive for the government.
The government is also trying to balance spending and taxes to keep the economy growing without causing problems like higher interest rates or a weaker currency.
Bloomberg Index Services Limited (BISL) deferred the inclusion of Indian government bonds in the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Index due to operational and market-infrastructure considerations.
The deferral led to a sell-off in the bond market, pushing the 10-year benchmark yield higher to 6.63%, up 5 basis points (bps).
The delay is expected to remove an anticipated anchor of demand, potentially affecting foreign investment inflows into Indian government bonds.
Economists highlight that the absence of index-related inflows will be felt immediately, especially with government borrowing set to rise in FY27.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may need to conduct aggressive open market operations (OMO) purchases to stabilize the market, with estimates suggesting purchases similar to FY26's Rs 5.7 lakh crore.
