Assam Proposes Tribal Status to Six Communities
The Assam government has presented a report suggesting that six communities should be given special tribal status.
These communities have been asking for this status for a long time because they feel they are not getting enough benefits.
The government has a plan to make sure these communities get the same rights as other tribal groups, like protection of their land and better representation.
However, the final decision will be made by the central government in India.
The report also suggests some changes to how benefits are given to different groups to make things fairer.
Some people protested against this report, but the government says protests should be peaceful.
The BJP says this is a step towards solving the problem, while the opposition says the report is not clear enough.
Assam government's GoM tabled an interim report proposing ST status for six communities.
Communities demanding ST status include Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes (Adivasis).
The GoM recommended measures to address socio-economic disadvantages and protect land rights.
The proposal requires statutory approval by the Parliament of India.
The GoM suggested sub-categorization of OBC reservation and a comprehensive socio-economic survey.
Protests erupted against the proposal, with some vandalizing the BTC assembly hall.
