Meloni’s Coalition Passes Calabria By-Election Test Against Far-Right Rival
Italy held a special election in Calabria.
The political group supporting Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni won the vote.
Its candidate received about 53% of the counted votes.
A new far-right party led by Roberto Vannacci received about 10%.
Some experts expected Vannacci’s party to win more support.
The centre-left candidate received about 35%.
Fewer people voted than in the previous election.
The result may affect how right-wing parties work together in Italy’s next national election.
Italy’s ruling coalition won a closely watched by-election in Calabria, with its candidate taking about 53% of the vote.
A nominee backed by Roberto Vannacci’s National Future received roughly 10% in the partial count.
The centre-left candidate won about 35%, improving on the bloc’s 2022 performance.
Turnout fell sharply to 22%, compared with 49.4% four years earlier.
The result suggests Vannacci’s new party performed below expectations but could still challenge Giorgia Meloni’s coalition ahead of the next general election.
