BBMP Proposes 52 New Canteens Despite Concerns Over Current Ones
The local government in Bengaluru wants to build 52 new food centers called Indira Canteens, costing about 20 crore rupees.
These canteens are meant to provide cheap food to people.
Although there were supposed to be one in each of the 198 areas of the city, some have closed due to poor maintenance and unpaid bills.
The government is still planning to add more, following a state government order to expand into new areas.
However, some people are unhappy because the current canteens are not well-maintained and they would prefer the government spend the money on schools or other city improvements instead.
BBMP plans to build 52 new Indira Canteens in Bengaluru at a cost of ₹20 crore.
The initiative, designed to serve the urban poor, originally aimed for one canteen per ward, with 160 out of 174 permanent canteens currently operational.
The decision follows the expansion of BBMP wards and a directive from the state government.
The technical qualification phase of the tender evaluation is complete, and financial bids are pending review.
Public criticism surrounds the plan, citing poor maintenance of existing canteens and a preference for investment in infrastructure.
