Perungulam Wetland Moves Toward Ramsar Recognition in Tamil Nadu

Perungulam is a large wetland in Tamil Nadu where many birds live and visit.

It also provides water for farming and supports many kinds of fish.

A study found 147 bird species there during one year.

Some of these birds travel long distances and stop at Perungulam for food and rest.

Several species are threatened or specially protected by law.

Officials want the wetland to receive Ramsar recognition, which highlights important wetlands.

They are also considering a Blue-Green Centre tag to teach people about its environmental value.

Before proposals are sent forward, they must include water-management requirements and be reviewed by the district wetland committee.
