Low Indian Household Investment in Markets
A recent survey by SEBI shows that only 9.5% of Indian households invest in the stock market.
This means over 30 crore households are not part of the investment world.
More than half of the households know about these investments but don't invest, and 37% don't even know about them.
Most investors are in cities, but many people in rural areas want to start investing soon.
Mutual funds and ETFs are the most popular choices.
The survey also found that people with higher incomes and education are more likely to invest.
Women invest less and are more cautious than men.
Only 9.5% of Indian households invest in securities markets, leaving 30 crore households outside the formal market ecosystem.
53.5% of households are aware of securities market products but do not invest, while 37% are not aware of such products.
Urban household penetration stands at 15%, more than double the 6% seen in rural areas.
Mutual funds and ETFs are the most popular entry products, with futures and options remaining marginal.
Participation rises sharply with income, education, and occupation, with men showing higher participation rates than women.
