India’s Urban Fund Pushes Nature Into City Infrastructure

India’s Urban Fund Pushes Nature Into City Infrastructure

Indian cities face flooding, extreme heat and problems with water.

Their usual response is to build bigger drains, embankments and pipelines.

These projects use a lot of concrete and money.

The article says cities should also think of nature as part of their infrastructure.

In April 2026, the Union government operationalised a Rs 1 lakh crore Urban Challenge Fund.

The fund is expected to help generate about Rs 4 lakh crore in urban investment over five years.

Government assistance can pay for 25 percent of a project’s cost.

The fund aims to help cities become stronger, fairer and better prepared for climate problems.
