Electrolyser Plants Idle Due to Low Demand
HomiHydrogen, a company that makes machines called electrolysers, has built a big factory in Jalgaon, Maharashtra.
They spent a lot of money (Rs 400 crore) to set up the factory, but they're not using it because no one is buying their electrolysers.
The company's leader, Siddharth Mayur, says the factory can make a lot of electrolysers, but there's no demand.
Other companies in India are in the same situation.
The government gave money to these companies to make electrolysers, but they can only get that money if they sell the electrolysers.
The problem is that Chinese electrolysers are much cheaper, so it's hard for Indian companies to sell theirs.
They want the government to help create more demand or make it harder for cheaper Chinese imports to come in.
Without help, it's tough for these companies to start and grow their business.
HomiHydrogen has invested Rs 400 crore in an electrolyser plant in Jalgaon but is not commissioning it due to lack of demand.
The plant can produce 150 MW in one shift and 300 MW in two shifts, but it remains idle.
Twelve companies have received PLI for local electrolyser production, but most face similar demand issues except for Adani and Reliance.
The government's PLI scheme provides Rs 4,440 crore, but companies can only claim it upon supplying electrolysers to customers.
Indian electrolyser manufacturers struggle to compete with cheaper Chinese imports, which cost 30-40% less per kW.
