TRAI Seeks Input on Spectrum Auction Competition
TRAI, the telecom regulator, wants to know if other companies besides phone companies should be allowed to bid for radio waves (spectrum) used for phones and internet.
They're concerned because not enough companies are bidding, and the government wants to make sure there is enough competition.
TRAI is asking the public for their opinions on this, especially since many radio waves are currently unsold and carriers aren't bidding aggressively.
They are also considering requiring carriers to provide better mobile coverage.
The government gets money from selling these radio waves, so more competition can mean better prices and better service.
TRAI is consulting on whether to allow non-telecom entities to bid in spectrum auctions.
The goal is to boost competition in the auction process.
The regulator is seeking public feedback by October 28.
Significant spectrum in various bands remains unsold.
The government previously received less revenue than expected from the spectrum auction.
