SC Declines PIL on Bottled Water Standards
The Supreme Court of India decided not to hear a case about the safety of bottled water.
The case was about making the rules for chemicals in bottled water stricter, like in other countries.
The court said that many people in India don't even have enough drinking water, so focusing on the quality of bottled water is like worrying about luxury things when basic needs aren't met.
The person who filed the case said that the chemicals in the plastic bottles can be harmful to health.
The court suggested that the person should talk to the authorities about it instead.
Supreme Court declined to hear a PIL on revising bottled water standards for antimony and DEHP.
Court called it 'luxury litigation' and emphasized the lack of drinking water access in India.
Petitioner argued that Indian standards allow higher levels of harmful chemicals than WHO and international standards.
CJI Surya Kant suggested the petitioner focus on the unavailability of drinking water instead.
The plea highlighted health risks including cardiovascular, respiratory, and organ damage from these chemicals.
