AP Government Schools: 16,357 Operate With Only One Teacher
The government of India said that in the state of Andhra Pradesh, more than 16,000 public schools have only one teacher.
This was revealed in a meeting of the upper house of Parliament after a member asked about teacher shortages.
The ministry also gave the number of teachers at each level: about 75,000 in primary schools, 7,000 in upper primary, 88,000 in secondary, and 32,000 in higher secondary.
They did not share how many teacher posts are still empty, because that is decided by the state.
The national average number of students per teacher is about 19 in primary schools and 15 in secondary schools, which is within the limits set by the national education policy.
16,357 government schools in Andhra Pradesh are operating with just one teacher.
The Union Ministry of Education presented the figures in Rajya Sabha after MP Randeep Singh Surjewala’s question on teacher vacancies.
Andhra Pradesh has 74,616 primary, 7,254 upper primary, 87,545 secondary, and 31,710 higher secondary teachers.
No state‑wise data on sanctioned strength or vacancies was provided; recruitment is a state responsibility.
National average pupil‑teacher ratios are 19:1 primary, 17:1 upper primary, 15:1 secondary, 23:1 higher secondary, all within NEP norms.
