Experts Urge Smoke-Free Public Places as India Faces 325,000 Deaths

Second-hand smoke is smoke that people breathe when someone else uses tobacco nearby.

A study estimated that about 444 million people in India were exposed to it in 2023.

It linked this exposure to about 325,600 deaths that year.

Health experts said this smoke can hurt people who do not smoke themselves.

They highlighted risks for women and children, who may not be able to choose where they are exposed.

Smoke can reach people in public places, workplaces and homes.

Experts called for public places to be completely smoke-free, rather than having special smoking areas.

They also said India should work to prevent tobacco use and addiction, especially among young people.
