Indian ETF Outperforms Benchmark via IT Buyback
An Indian investment fund called Aditya Birla Sun Life Nifty 50 ETF has done something unusual.
It has made more money than the standard it follows, which is rare.
This happened because the fund sold some shares of a big IT company back to the company at a higher price.
This extra money helped the fund do better than usual.
Normally, such funds try to match their benchmarks exactly, but this one took a small risk to make more money.
Other funds in India are also starting to do similar things to stand out.
The fund's manager says this is a good way to make extra money over time, as long as they don't take too many risks.
Aditya Birla Sun Life Nifty 50 ETF outperformed its benchmark by 12% since April 1.
The fund gained by tendering shares of a large IT company in a buyback at a 16% premium.
This is rare as most passive funds aim to mirror their benchmarks exactly.
The strategy is part of a shift towards 'enhanced-index' or 'passive-plus' strategies in India.
The fund's manager argues that focusing on tracking difference over time is beneficial for long-term investors.
